Author visit – Chie Kutsuwada

On 8^th June, we were delighted to welcome Chie Kutsuwada to Copthall School. Chie is a Japanese manga artist, and co-author with Julian Sedgwick of Tsunami Girl, which was shortlisted for this year’s Carnegie Award.

Both Year 8 and Year 9 students enjoyed Chie’s talk and presentation on what manga is and how she works, and Chie also ran two brilliant workshops where students learned how to create manga characters of their own. One student said ‘I enjoyed how she talked about her inspiration and what led her to start manga. She also talked about overcoming her fear which has now inspired me to try something new.’ Students also had the opportunity to buy a copy of Tsunami girl and have it signed by Chie – lots had plenty of questions and stayed on to talk all things manga.
