Winners of the Tycoon In School 2017 Competition!

In September 2017, Copthall School entered the Tycoon In Schools competition which was developed by Peter Jones CBE in response to the Prime Minister’s pledge to support every school in England to run its own business at the launch of StartUp Britain.
Tycoon in Schools is a unique national enterprise competition for students aged 6 to 18 which gives teams an opportunity to write a business plan and run their business with a start-up loan and learn what it takes to be an entrepreneur!
Our sixth form students formed The Pump-It Team whose plan was to raise money to donate to Wateraid. Pump-It smashed their original target and donated over £2,000 to Wateraid to fund a pump and sanitation block in a developing country’s school. The Government matched their funding hence doubled the donation to Wateraid to help an extra community with vital life-saving infrastructure.
From over 1000 applicants the 8 finalists were invited to Windsor Castle to meet HRH Prince Andrew and Peter Jones CBE in September 2017.
Copthall’s Pump-It Team not only won the Key Stage 5 sixth form category, they also walked away with the overall winning Trophy and were crowned national Tycoons In School Winners!
The team’s inspirational Business Studies teacher Leigh Pignatelli oversaw the project and said “From the moment the students applied for their position to be in the business team, they worked incredibly hard to ensure their project and business plan came to life. With their determination and hard work they were passionate about ensuring enough profit would be made to support Wateraid and build a pump in a developing country. The entrepreneurial skills which they have learned and displayed will no doubt carry them through their future careers. We are very excited about the next stages of our business idea and rolling out this initiative across other schools within the Borough of Barnet.”
