Welcome to the Religious Studies Department

At Copthall we aim to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and respect to enable them to flourish within our diverse and ever-changing world

Religious Studies is a popular part of Copthall’s curriculum. We follow the Barnet SACRE and we focus on ensuring that our curriculum contains study of a broad range of beliefs – reflecting the diversity in our student body and local community. At Key Stage 3 (years 7-9), students have R.S lessons twice a fortnight. During these lessons students are introduced to fundamental knowledge about belief systems; how they originate, how similar they are and the impact they have on individuals. Students are encouraged to continually reflect on their own beliefs as well as tolerance and respect for others.

Religious Studies is taught as a core subject to all year 7 – 11. This is so pupils encounter ancient and living traditions that have shaped the world. They can explore foundational texts and the way that individuals and groups live in the world, as well as the values, beliefs and ideas that bind people together

As a core GCSE course, all of Year 10 students have core RS lessons four times a fortnight. Throughout year 10-11, students will be covering the AQA Religious Studies syllabus. The main focus here is Christian beliefs, teachings and practices along with Islamic beliefs, teachings and practices followed by studying four themes around Islam and Christianity. RE is provided for all pupils it is inclusive and broad minded.
